What if the way we connect with children starts with reconnecting ourselves?
Grounded is a five-session professional development experience for educators exploring what becomes possible when we slow down, pay attention, and rethink our role outside.
"Not a curriculum. A container."
The Roots 2 Rise Elemental Framework
Children are arriving in programs more anxious, less able to sit with discomfort, and more disconnected from their bodies, each other, and the natural world. At the same time, many educators are feeling the pressure to fill every moment, manage every outcome, and respond to behaviour rather than what's underneath it.
The research is clear: children need unstructured time, meaningful risk, and relationships with adults who can resist the urge to step in and make everything easier. But creating those conditions asks something of us first.
Our own nervous systems set the tone for the environments we create. When we are regulated, curious, and present, children feel it. When we are reactive, rushed, or disconnected from the natural world around us, they feel that too.
Nature, when we learn to use it intentionally, becomes what Reggio Emilia calls the third teacher. Not a backdrop for activities, but an active part of the learning environment itself.
That is where Grounded begins.
Grounded brings together ideas from child development, Reggio Emilia, Montessori, loose parts and risky play research, child-led and whole child learning, and our understanding of connection, reciprocity, and interdependence.
At the centre of all of it is connection: to place, to each other, to ourselves, and to the natural world.
The five elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether, give us a way to explore that connection. Each element offers a different lens for thinking about children, the environments we create, and our role as educators.
We explore what it means to really observe a child rather than simply manage their behaviour. To notice what might be underneath what we see. To know when to step in and when to step back. To shape spaces and rhythms that support exploration, connection, and independence.
The practical tools are part of the training. But they grow from the way we learn to see.
Grounded gives you a foundation, not a script. There is room to bring your own passions, your own context, and your own questions into the work. The framework will continue to evolve as we do.
If you're looking for lesson plans or a ready-made outdoor curriculum, this probably isn't the right fit. What we're building here is a foundation. The real learning happens over time, through practice. It's a slow build, and that's exactly what makes it stick.
Each session moves through one element, a lens for understanding children, nature, and your own role as an educator.
The Elemental Framework is not a curriculum to follow, it is a way of seeing, and a practice. Each element builds on the last, bringing together child development, play, observation, facilitation, and whole child learning in ways that apply across settings. Earth teaches us stability. Water reminds us of the power of flow. Fire ignites. Air expands. Ether connects. Together, they form a complete lens for understanding what children need and what educators can offer. Refined over 6 years of Roots 2 Rise programs and 15 years of diverse experience in the outdoors, the framework is informed by research and shaped by how we begin to see children differently.
More than 20 concepts. Five sessions. One framework that holds them all together.
How does safety and structure provide freedom for exploration?
How do we learn what child-led play looks like, and the value of the flow state?
How do we nurture agency and expression?
How do we create space for freedom and relationship?
How do we integrate it all and understand our own place in the relationship?
You'll learn alongside a small group of educators who care deeply about how children experience the outdoors.
This is a space for collaboration. A place to think through your own practice, your own conditions, and your own questions alongside other educators who are doing the same.
This training is for educators, facilitators, and practitioners who work with children and want to go deeper into their own practice.
Whether you work in a classroom, a daycare, an outdoor program, a therapy setting, a camp, or a homeschool environment, the framework is designed to be applied across contexts. The concepts are transferable. What changes is how you see the space, the child, and your own role in it.
Deepen your understanding of play, development, and what children are telling you when words aren't enough.
Bring learning outside with intention, and learn how to read what's happening in the space rather than filling it with direction.
Add depth and language to what you already do intuitively outside.
Explore how nature, child-led experience, and the framework's concepts can support and extend your existing practice.
Build a nature-based practice rooted in how children actually learn, play, and grow.
Give your team a shared language and framework to build from together.
This training might be for you if...
Grounded is a program that ties together childhood education and nature connection, showing that you cannot have one without the other. It allows you to understand children more deeply and to feel more confident in how you interact with them.
A balanced development program designed for educators that truly anyone with children in their life or sheer curiosity would benefit from. It balanced practical, tangible approaches to working with children with deeper reflection on things like relationship, connection and presence. It gives you concrete tools to bring back into your practice and also invites you to go deeper into the less visible aspects of this work.
Roots 2 Rise had such a major impact on me, I'm eternally grateful for this.
Working at Roots 2 Rise saved me emotionally at a time when I was not doing well and feeling very constrained by the education system. I learned a new way to teach, learn, and support children's mental health through connecting back to the earth, our greatest teacher. It has had a tremendous impact on me personally and professionally and will continue to guide my learning as an educator.
This cohort is part of the ongoing development and evaluation of Grounded. We are working with an independent organization to better understand what changes for educators through the training and how that learning carries into practice.
As one of the early cohorts, you'll help shape what comes next while receiving the full Grounded training.

I'm Robyn Broudie, founder of Roots 2 Rise Outdoors, with a background in Kinesiology and Early Childhood Development. Over 16 years of working in outdoor, adventure, and nature-based programs, with children, youth, and adults across a wide range of environments and needs, I've developed a practice that is both research-informed and shaped by real experience.
I have always been curious about something most of us already sense to be true: that we need nature. But what is it about it? Can we actually facilitate connection to it? How does that happen, especially in times that feel more isolating than ever? Those questions are what built this framework.
This training is a collaborative experience. There is room for discussion, questions, different perspectives, and for the framework itself to keep evolving. We are learning alongside one another, and alongside the children growing up in a world that is changing quickly.
I don't have all the answers. I have a framework, years of practice, a lot of questions, and a genuine belief that we are better at this when we do it together.
As we continue to navigate uncertain times, staying grounded isn't a luxury. It's a necessity. And it begins with us.
I'd love to explore it with you.
Be among the first.
A remembering that what children need: time, stillness, the natural world. It's something we need too.
